I am a pre-senior, born in Alberta but raised in the traffic of the Vancouver suburbs. I've always felt a connection to Alberta and after becoming a young widow I felt it was time to come 'home' from West Kelowna to Airdrie to start a new life.
While still in West Kelowna, one of my senior customers afflicted with MS, would have me drive her to Westbank's 'concert in the park' or to Penticton to see 'Elvis' in concert, along with a few airport trips. I enjoyed her company along with making sure that she was sure footed while using either her cane or walker.
After attending Airdrie's home and garden show and speaking with a representative from Community links. I was surprised to find out that there is no personal transportation service available for the seniors of this community and surrounding areas. All that is currently available is transit, taxi or if you're lucky enough to have a volunteer from City Links drive them to their appointment. This is where my inspiration to get involved with the seniors and their transportation needs developed.
For many elders, driving is no longer possible or even desirable, so whether the seniors lives in a care home, live with family members, or possibly still in their own homes, they still have appointments they need to attend or leisure activities to continue to enjoy. It may be going to the doctors, dentist or maybe they have an appointment at the hospital. Maybe they just want to get out and do some shopping at the local mall. Wherever they want To Go, I am licensed and insured to transport them and my vehicle is government inspected for safety.
